In Germany, the introduction of palliative medicine as a specialty is discussed controversially at the moment.
Some associations such as DEGAM (German Society of General Practice/Family Medicine) see no need for further specialisation and think that palliative care is mainly represented by general practitioners.
Supporters such as DGP (German Association for Palliative Medicine) regard a specialty as an opportunity to improve academic structures, to promote young professionals in the field, and especially to improve patient care. The growing number of non-oncological, chronically and seriously ill patients creates new challenges which require further specialisation. Therefore, DGP is working on the development of a profile for a future specialist in palliative medicine in addition to the already existing sub-specialty “Palliative Medicine”.
